I tried reinstalling different versions of the driver, but the error persists. It seems this is related to the Intel Rapid Storage driver (to which iastorav.inf belongs), which I uninstalled at some point before updates began to fail.

I have tried the following to no avail, none of these produced any change or interesting error message: Windows Update still installs component updates like KB2993939, but Windows update packages all fail. On my Windows 10 21H1 19043.1052 machine, updates have consistently failed since KB5004237. Hi, I have looked extensively for an answer, and while there are related issues posted and solved here, none of the existing answers fixed my problem.
